The Personal Information Protection
and Electronic Documents Act ("PIPEDA"), is a Canadian statute focused on privacy matters involving business purposes. The Act provides that that personal information cannot be collected, used, or disclosed in Canadian commercial activities without the informed consent of individuals providing such information. Individuals have the right to access and, if necessary, to challenge personal information stored by an organization. Further, information can only be used specifically for the intended purpose for which it was collected.
